Belongings II: Repurposed at Crosstown Arts

Here is a sneak peek of the painting I made for the Belongings II: Repurposed show at Crosstown Arts. And this is really just a peek - it's about 3 square inches of a painting that measures 54" x 20.5"!

Hope to see you at the show this Friday!

Oil Painting from Sketches and Photographs Class at Flicker Street Studio

I'm teaching Oil Painting from Sketches and Photographs again next month at Flicker Street Studio. I really enjoy teaching this class because it is closest to what I do in the studio: working with photographs and sketches to create oil paintings. We start with a creating a composition, then move on to color mixing before starting a painting, so if you are new you get a step-by-step lesson, and if you are not new to painting you get a refresher on the process.

Click here to sign up - the deadline to register is Tuesday, April 26.

Collection: Sketches from Thanksgiving

I'm missing my family today (and most days). Here is everything I sketched the last time we were all together...

We drove all the way to Daphne after work the Tuesday before Thankgiving.

We stayed in a condo on the beach.

The ultimate Gulf Coast sketchbook page: beach and Whataburger.

"Do you like ladies with makeup?" My two youngest nieces interviewed my brother John about his taste in ladies.

The top sketch is my sister's beautiful backyard.

My favorite part was going to the National Seashore, a protected area right near my sister's house.

And eating.

Studio Night Last Night: Hustle at Crosstown

Last night (instead of Studio Night) I attended a panel discussion at Crosstown called Hustle: Fine-Tuning Your Studio Practice, where I sketched all of the speakers. Except I couldn't see Nick's face because the person in front of me was blocking him. From left to right, Susan Maakestad, Nick Pena, Lawrence Matthews, and Terry Lynn.

The talk made me feel very validated, as a person who has a fairly regular studio practice.

This is part of an ongoing series of professional development talks hosted by UrbanArt Commission, Crosstown Arts, and ArtsMemphis. Check out Crosstown Arts for more information.
