Memphis Urban Sketchers This Saturday

This Saturday, June 2, I'll be sketching at the Memphis Central Library - 3030 Poplar Avenue at 10:00 AM with Memphis Urban Sketchers. 


Join us if you can - we'll meet just inside the entrance and sketch throughout the building. The forecast for Saturday is "mostly sunny and delightful," which gives us opportunities to sketch outside as well!

Chicagoland Art

Chicagoland Art

I've been in the Chicago area at a conference for a few days (you may have seen my snarky sketch earlier),and was able to get to the Museum of Contemporary Art today, just to get some museum time in.

There are a few good shows up right now, but the one I enjoyed the most, and was most surprised by, was Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s. It was such a fun show, and really took me back in time. It reminded me of looking at art magazines when I was in high school!

I can't resist museums, so I also could not pass up the opportunity to visit the Museum of Hummels, which is actually within walking distance of my hotel in Rosemont, during lunch yesterday. I learned a lot! For instance, did you know Hummel was a woman? Also a nun? And the sale of the figurines goes towards charities supported by her order? And that Rosemont had the same mayor for about 50 years? And has more hotel rooms than residents? Now you do.

Yay, museums!

I spent part of the day at the Brooks Museum seeing the film Woman's Picture. Then I went back home and talked to my Mom for a good long time!

Streetlight Close-Up

Sketched this streetlight from the 2nd floor patio at Alfred's on Beale Street. I was there with the Memphis Urban Sketchers and it was unexpectedly hot and expectedly crowded, so being able to see so much from one spot was great! I was trying to describe the old Pancake House sign that used to be on Summer Ave. It was, as usual, easier just to draw it.

Day in Sketches

First I delivered a tiny painting that I sold on Etsy.

At work we had a wedding shower for a couple who both work there. I made a last-minute banner after testing out the middle of my words.

The drive home. I stopped for some good shapes and shadows.

Now it's time for Studio Night!
