Memphis Urban Sketchers - 1st Group Sketch

This Saturday, September 4, 10 AM - 12 PM
at the Memphis Farmers Market

Feel like getting out of the house? Feel like sketching? Why not do both!

This is the first of many sketching excursions to come, inspired by Urban Sketchers (urbansketchers.com), an international group of people who share the interest of drawing on location and telling the story of their surroundings.

Meet at the north side of the Memphis Farmers Market (behind where the coffee is), we'll spread out and sketch, then come back together to see what everybody made!

Please spread the word and bring your friends. Hope to see you there!

Sketching at the Farmers Market

At 10am it was already about a thousand degrees outside, and therefore I should have put more thought into planning out my sketches. Instead of more involved sketches, it would have been a better idea to do a series of very quick sketches. I was a little ambitious, thinking my sheer will to sketch would make me less hot. I have never sweat so much sitting still.

I wish I'd had a chance to put color in this one - so much color.

Leaving Portland

Certainly you did not think I was finished with Portland!

As you can tell, I was very inspired by the Urban Sketchers Symposium, and I just kept sketching all day as I traveled home. Here is Gail's store, Art Media, right across from the light rail station:

I took the light rail, "The Max," to the airport because it is soooo cheap.

While xanax takes care of my phobia of flying, it doesn't totally knock out my flying-related superstitions, so I couldn't bring myself to sketch the plane like so many others did, so here's the baggage cart:

Cordele, GA

I did these over July 4 weekend while visiting with my family and celebrating my grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary.

I did this one under the close watch of 2 of my nieces, Harper and Genevieve. They made sure I did not forget anything.

Harper and Genevieve were watching me do this one, too. They really wanted me to put some apples in that tree. And a horse.

Urban Sketchers Symposium Day 3, Part 3

Started the day sketching...

Ended the day sketching...

Urban Sketchers Symposium Day 3, Part 2

Urban Composition with Veronica Lawlor - also International Sketch Crawl Day (I think that's what it's called)

Started with some thumbnails

Final sketch of the symposium: Pacific Northwest College of Art

I drew this in the shade (the sun came out!), surrounded by about 8 or 10 people also sketching in complete but comfortable silence. It was a great way to end the sketching.

Urban Sketchers Symposium Day 3

Urban Nature with Matt Brehm

What a lovely day this was. Started out a little exhausted, so Matt suggested I make small, quick sketches to loosen up:

Once I was warmed up I tackled a larger section of the park:

We moved to a different park, and I made a quick sketch to determine what I would work on next:

Again, after working in pencil had to mix it up and make a painting

Spent this whole session with Gail, owner of Art Media in Portland, just chatting away. It was quite cool that morning and we had a nice cup of coffee and snack while working in this park.
