Please visit Sketchwork at <a href="http://elizabethalley.com/sketchwork">elizabethalley.com/sketchwork</a>. After 12 years with Blogger, I am incorporating my blog into my website because the interface on Weebly is easier to deal with and has apps for iPad and my phone. It's a little glitchy, but it just makes it easier to post and so hopefully I'll post more? Hope to see you over there. I'll leave this here as long as Blogger lets me.Memphis Urban Sketchershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03488630942281192986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270013366297734525.post-89668197954775514052018-05-12T18:12:00.001-05:002018-05-15T14:01:13.888-05:00A Story about Pens<div><img id="id_46b6_39d0_9d33_a469" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MoK9tL5PA00/Wvd0w83timI/AAAAAAABDKY/JX0ssXMmxQwndEXB6NFgcGlEhc1p1JrCQCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 396px; height: auto; margin: 4px;"><br><br></div><div>I drew this story about some kids who live behind us and make me think about the backyard I spent most of my childhood in. When I draw stories like this, I usually use diluted sumi ink for the grays, Sakura Pigma Sensei 04 black pens, Pentel brush pen and Pentel ink brush pen.</div><div><br></div><div>I came to love the Sakura Pigma Sensei after my husband bought a pack of different sizes for me to try out. Though I have my favorites, I do try to use new materials to see what else is out there. In that spirit, I recently bought some new brush pens from jetpens.com. I love the Pentel brush pen, but sometimes wonder if I would get more use out of a brush pen that had a little less give.</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_73d_d2a5_480_a8a0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZxSah2HCxko/Wvd0wyuLE7I/AAAAAAABDKg/n2pQjvALEWsofmPU5r234hGonEItCfsBQCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 396px; height: auto; margin: 4px;"><br><br></div><div>The Pilot Fude-Makase acts more like a felt tip pen than a brush pen, which I like. It doesn’t have too much give, allowing for a lot of control. It felt good to use it so I started using it on this drawing.</div><div><br></div><div>Before using it on the drawing, and really before buying it, I should have paid attention to the specifications and noticed it was neither waterproof nor lightfast. I painted over the pen marks with diluted sumi and noticed the ink running. I thought maybe the ink needed more time to dry so I came back later and tried again. It still ran, and turned a pinkish/purplish color that indicates a dye-based ink that will likely discolor when exposed to light (based on my previous experience with non-lightfast pens).</div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_6bbc_bad_207a_ac05" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z716pYaCBJo/Wvd0wyDNQHI/AAAAAAABDKc/DIYpUkgzUJwtjshNjimvuLbRF2Pr6pCcwCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 396px; height: auto; margin: 4px;"><br><br></div><div>This story drawing lives in a sketchbook, so it won’t see the light of day very much. But just to be sure – because I really like the lines and marks from these pens – I made this chart. (If you have taken a class from me you know I love charts!) I went over the ink with water immediately after making the marks, again after an hour, and again the next day.</div><div><img id="id_250_f184_d9ae_ae8e" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xqN-DTutbOo/Wvd0wwmiEGI/AAAAAAABDKk/qvwfXqhN2Ugq8Pq0x2WstFo3Yvi_-Ws7wCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 396px; height: auto; margin: 4px;"></div><div>The verdict is that while using this pen did not ruin my drawing at all, it will not be a sketching pen or a story-drawing pen for me. But it will be a writing pen! It works beautifully in my Moleskine Cahier notebook (I prefer unlined), which I use for personal notes, so there is no water involved and I won’t mind if it eventually fades. Verdict number two is that I need to pay more attention when I buy stuff.</div><div><br></div> Memphis Urban Sketchershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03488630942281192986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270013366297734525.post-60569886799724937032018-05-09T14:02:00.001-05:002018-05-09T14:07:05.655-05:00Testing a New Blogging AppHave we reached the point in technology when a small laptop feels too cumbersome? I may have. Lately I just want to use my iPad for everything. I can also draw on it, so that just makes it better than a laptop, right? In trying a bigger switch to smaller technology, I am testing a new app. Let’s see if this works!<div><img id="id_d36b_8fe4_87bd_29e8" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-INBNr2Nu-ME/WvNFtUpqZ7I/AAAAAAABDGA/OK--4kvxuYsocfzdl7i2nJh9t6L3wXEnwCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 394px; height: auto; margin: 4px;"></div><div><span style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">Here’s a sketch from several weeks ago on a visit to the Memphis Botanic Gardens made with Pentel brush pen, watercolor and colored pencils, in a Stillman & Birn Alpha.<br></span><br><br><div><br></div></div>Memphis Urban Sketchershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03488630942281192986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270013366297734525.post-1731413967217114132018-03-27T10:00:00.000-05:002018-03-27T10:00:37.220-05:00#oneweek100people But Later than Everyone Else<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E9MH4nn7gGk/WrmiAAW0oCI/AAAAAAABCUw/YNjQHn9Fv2MHEJldBNmho7FryJCkikWTQCLcBGAs/s1600/03.05.18a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1247" data-original-width="1600" height="311" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E9MH4nn7gGk/WrmiAAW0oCI/AAAAAAABCUw/YNjQHn9Fv2MHEJldBNmho7FryJCkikWTQCLcBGAs/s400/03.05.18a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Another round of #oneweek100people took place the week of March 5 through 9 (that's right - just five days in that week!) and I participated, sort of. It was my last week at my old job so it was a bit hectic. And I kept coming across more bananas and birds than people - it was a weird week.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VwRENAA6Pno/Wrmh_zkg6lI/AAAAAAABCUs/I0f3eTPpip4vRRUfuhKpRQrPXMvrHY_awCLcBGAs/s1600/03.06.18a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1029" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VwRENAA6Pno/Wrmh_zkg6lI/AAAAAAABCUs/I0f3eTPpip4vRRUfuhKpRQrPXMvrHY_awCLcBGAs/s400/03.06.18a.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
But just as I've done in other #oneweek100people challenges, I ended up drawing way more people than I would have otherwise.<br />
<br />
Final count: 32 people, two bananas, ten birds and two dogs.<br />

My new office is right next door to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and every day I park facing the trees and the bushes that are just starting to flower. Today I had a few minutes to capture the tulips visible through the trees.<br />
<br />
I stopped at the dry cleaners on my way home from work and noticed what looks like a demolition sign in front of this great 1960s building on Poplar just east of Perkins. I honestly hate to think of what will be put up in its place. Commercial architecture ain't what it used to be.<br />

It surprises me that I'm the type of person who likes to travel with a lot of people, but here I was on my ninth or tenth trip with a bunch of people. We went to New Orleans for the first weekend of Mardi Gras. Five of us in one house, two in another, and two more in a hotel.<br />

I've really trained these people to just deal with me sketching during a lunch stop or at a bar.<br />

The house we stayed in was so nice. It gave each of us enough privacy, but I could also hear when it was time to get up by the sound of someone else making coffee.<br />
<br />
I rediscovered my love of the Lamy Safari right before this trip. I filled it with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, a lovely waterproof blue-black.<br />

No trip to New Oreans with this group is complete without a visit to Felix's. It's right across the street from Acme Oyster House, and dare I say better, even though I've never been to Acme because the line is always too long? Short if no lines at Felix's.<br />

We went to the Chewbacchus Parade - love this one! We went a couple of years ago, and it's a big hit with this crowd. Several of us got our faces all glittered up, donned tiaras, and grabbed lots of goodies from the paraders. I just sketched, while my buddy Jimmy held an umbrella over me when it started raining.<br />

On Sunday we just watched parades all day (and napped). We stayed off of Napolean and were close enough to walk to St. Charles, an ideal location for parade watching. As I painted this I took breaks to catch beads. I even caught a cup!<br />

Finally! I have wanted to make this for a year! I post a lot (A. Lot.) of pictures of this building on my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/elizabethalley/">Instagram</a> account, and by extension on Facebook and <a href="https://twitter.com/alleyelizabeth">Twitter</a>. And sometimes people ask why. And sometimes it drives people crazy because I can't give a full answer. Well, here is your full answer to the question Why do you love the Clark Tower so much?<br />

Last Saturday I went downtown to do a test run (walk) of a sketch walk that Memphis Urban Sketchers is having this Saturday, March 3, to commemorate MLK50 and the 1968 Sanitation Workers' Strike. For more information see the <a href="http://urbansketchers-memphis.blogspot.com/">Memphis Urban Sketchers blog</a>.<br />
<br />
It was hot and rainy - weird for February 24, but our weather is nothing but weird lately. But I pulled on my rain jacket and hood and kept at it, even though my sketches and notes got quite smudged.<br />

This is a three-week class about working with a variety of water-based media and techniques to create a finished painting. It is inspired by what I learned from the late Bonnie Beaver.<br />
<br />
I took mixed-media painting from Bonnie Beaver several times when working toward my art degree at the University of Memphis. She was always so full of energy and ideas. What sticks with me the most is the way she would coax art out of a mess of sprays and stencils and shapes.<br />
<br />
These two paintings were from a series I made in Ms. Beaver's class some time in the mid 90s. I would put down a base of colors and shapes and then step back and see what the painting wanted next. It was fun to explore the materials and see what I could make happen.<br />

In this class we will use water-based media such as watercolor, liquid watercolor and inks, Neocolor (water-soluble artist crayons), water-soluble graphite, Inktense sticks, maybe a little gouache, maybe a little gesso, and anything else that wants to be mixed with water. We will use stenciling, spraying, salt, and other ways to make texture. We’ll work on big paper (22” x 30”) moving from experiments to a finished piece.<br />
<br />
I hope you’ll join me!<br />

I love this assignment because it gets me looking for people to sketch, and if there aren't any I end up sketching a car or a tree - the point is I end up sketching something.<br />
<br />
I only made it up to 59 today... I wonder how many I can sketch in New Orleans over the next few days!<br />

It consists of a series of 16 ink drawings that tell the true story about a young woman who disappeared from Reykjavik last January, called Story of a Girl. I drew the version of the story - the search, investigation, and the impact this event had on the community - that lived in my head as I followed the developments in the <a href="http://icelandreview.com/">Iceland Review</a>.<br />

I hope you'll come see the show at <a href="http://crosstownarts.org/">Crosstown Arts</a> (in Crosstown Concourse). It'll be up through March 11.<br />
<br />
I also hope you'll come back here to see if I post more sketches - I hope I do! I plan to do another <a href="http://sketchwork.blogspot.com/2017/07/one-week-100-people-symposium-prep.html">#oneweek100people</a> next week, but just on my own and will try to post my sketches :)Memphis Urban Sketchershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03488630942281192986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270013366297734525.post-3830137419383751302017-10-03T20:09:00.000-05:002017-10-03T20:09:01.763-05:00Caught Sketching!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After I attended the Society for Technical Communication annual Summit in Washington DC in May, the good people at the STC asked me to write an article for their magazine, Intercom. I was honored but nervous. They asked me to write specifically about the sketch notes I was making at the Summit, so writing about sketching made it a bit easier. I have great editors available to me, so that eased my mind as well. I guess I felt so at ease that after I turned it in I sort of lost track of it until I came across it last week!<br />
<br />
Here's the article - if you click on it you can see it bigger and read it.<br />

On Eclipse Day I was headed to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens to participate in the viewing from their lawn, but then I saw the Clark Tower and knew that's where I should be. It was like a party - there were food trucks and people milling around outside with their eclipse glasses and yelling "Wooooo!" whenever the clouds moved out of the way of viewing.<br />

After a morning meeting of the Urban Sketchers Advisory Board, I had hours and hours to sketch before my flight! What a treat!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jvIEHCYChek/Wa9pFQ-A_CI/AAAAAAAA9sQ/XaSpI6Vcwv4j1Ym46NovrqO8_8SRmtR3gCLcBGAs/s1600/07.30.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1426" height="316" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jvIEHCYChek/Wa9pFQ-A_CI/AAAAAAAA9sQ/XaSpI6Vcwv4j1Ym46NovrqO8_8SRmtR3gCLcBGAs/s400/07.30.17b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I sketched the Art Institute as though it was a completely flat box.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lTW1Ysg26P8/Wa9pFTxADzI/AAAAAAAA9sU/qd5jdq4moc4d5oBheZrJ4uMuCNITuLSyQCLcBGAs/s1600/07.30.17c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1426" height="316" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lTW1Ysg26P8/Wa9pFTxADzI/AAAAAAAA9sU/qd5jdq4moc4d5oBheZrJ4uMuCNITuLSyQCLcBGAs/s400/07.30.17c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I got to use some gouache! This is my favorite sketch from the trip.<br />
<br />

I love the differences in my sketch and <a href="http://www.drawingbythepound.com/">Orling's</a> - I described them as quiet (mine), and expressive (hers), much like our different personalities.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xsj33mjOGX0/Wa9pF30OhOI/AAAAAAAA9sc/qIdk1QVO3j0zpOjnDiN-l5vZbB9pYlHxgCLcBGAs/s1600/07.30.17e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1426" height="316" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Xsj33mjOGX0/Wa9pF30OhOI/AAAAAAAA9sc/qIdk1QVO3j0zpOjnDiN-l5vZbB9pYlHxgCLcBGAs/s400/07.30.17e.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Then it was time to go and all of a sudden it was just me after spending six days with 500 people!<br />

I sketched on the airplane until my last Pigma Graphic ran out of ink!<br />

On Saturday I took <a href="http://sketchmikesketch.blogspot.com/">Mike Daikubara's</a> workshop Draw Now Think Later. I wrote about it and the big post-symposium change that came from it <a href="http://sketchwork.blogspot.com/2017/08/symposium-sneak-peek-and-big-post.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
This workshop was so fun! We all sketched the hot dog and then the skyline. Putting the hot dog down first made the skyline so much less intimidating, it was amazing!<br />
<br />
<br />

After a rest and a quick lunch with some other sketchers, I went to Grant Park for the final sketch crawl. I again took a long time to start my sketch and was busy visiting and passing out macarons, so I didn't have time for much sketching. But the truth is, the Urban Sketchers Symposium isn't always about sketching!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LYKt3yDdDWo/Wa9lpQXWljI/AAAAAAAA9rs/VuFnKsIVsVQz63jhtaIFAw-_dlH0zUt8gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170729_170545.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LYKt3yDdDWo/Wa9lpQXWljI/AAAAAAAA9rs/VuFnKsIVsVQz63jhtaIFAw-_dlH0zUt8gCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170729_170545.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We gathered for the final group photo - almost 500 sketchers!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xud5uoRoubI/Wa9lqQiqtJI/AAAAAAAA9r4/k8DdK8l_Wo0S9yinnUS6J-kHSEm6hgO_QCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170729_190436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Xud5uoRoubI/Wa9lqQiqtJI/AAAAAAAA9r4/k8DdK8l_Wo0S9yinnUS6J-kHSEm6hgO_QCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170729_190436.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Everyone at the Symposium was inspired by <a href="http://marugodas.com/">Maru Godas</a> who taught a workshop called Gouache Like a Child. I was blown away by her sketches, and inspired to try gouache and to use a large sketchbook. These are the colors she used in her workshop for future reference.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJZmAZ6RVNo/Wa9lqWUX5NI/AAAAAAAA9r0/-ozaebcKDnQKZMDixqvF-eCb7llgjcJ_gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170729_202755.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZJZmAZ6RVNo/Wa9lqWUX5NI/AAAAAAAA9r0/-ozaebcKDnQKZMDixqvF-eCb7llgjcJ_gCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170729_202755.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
And then we found out where it will be next year! See you in Porto!<br />

Friday morning a few of us took a Lyft to the bank to take care of some Urban Sketchers business. It was my final official business as a board officer! It was also really fun for a trip to the bank, because of the lovely people I was with.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nj2c--rOCLA/Wa9iM4znDII/AAAAAAAA9q4/AVH4LzA9cw09AiOFZvmK08MJswG4m6oDwCLcBGAs/s1600/07.28.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="715" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nj2c--rOCLA/Wa9iM4znDII/AAAAAAAA9q4/AVH4LzA9cw09AiOFZvmK08MJswG4m6oDwCLcBGAs/s400/07.28.17b.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
Then we had a delicious lunch at the Revival Food Hall.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dx4JVL2E0Hk/Wa9iNiW68XI/AAAAAAAA9rA/M-qNf75_fI8CIDOav6FAOPDGfqBoClNdgCLcBGAs/s1600/07.28.17c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1316" data-original-width="1600" height="328" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dx4JVL2E0Hk/Wa9iNiW68XI/AAAAAAAA9rA/M-qNf75_fI8CIDOav6FAOPDGfqBoClNdgCLcBGAs/s400/07.28.17c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
My afternoon workshop was An Urban Sketcher's Guide to Figuring Out Perspective with <a href="http://simoneridyard.blogspot.com/">Simone Ridyard</a>.<br />
<br />
I have been using the concepts of perspective for so long without really thinking about it anymore that it was nice to get to know it again, and to work with pencil, which I tend to eschew.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D-b9USdw9Pc/Wa9iQOh8-WI/AAAAAAAA9rU/BeAZpxNxHuUmP-Jq8KaWqFeyyxXVUpftQCLcBGAs/s1600/07.28.17de.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="949" data-original-width="1600" height="236" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D-b9USdw9Pc/Wa9iQOh8-WI/AAAAAAAA9rU/BeAZpxNxHuUmP-Jq8KaWqFeyyxXVUpftQCLcBGAs/s400/07.28.17de.png" width="400" /></a></div>
I wish I'd had more time for my final sketch - I took too long to start! Or maybe I could have used less paper? Nah. It was fun anyway.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8zMkZl_gECw/Wa9iOXlp3GI/AAAAAAAA9rE/eOZVaodZbIsaSWaggVuoPH10MHLlhMSlwCLcBGAs/s1600/07.28.17f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1426" height="316" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8zMkZl_gECw/Wa9iOXlp3GI/AAAAAAAA9rE/eOZVaodZbIsaSWaggVuoPH10MHLlhMSlwCLcBGAs/s400/07.28.17f.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.portlandsketcher.com/">Rita Sabler</a> gave a great talk about sketching demonstrations. She has really put herself out there to document rallies and protests, and has amazing sketches to show for it.<br />
<br />
After Rita impressed us, <a href="https://hugobrc.wordpress.com/">Hugo Costa</a> charmed us with his talk about making a sketch a day.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then a big dinner at Thai Spoon while passing around sketchbooks and testing out pens. This might be the best part of the Symposium.<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YKAP8F-Jiyo/Wa9cmC2ahFI/AAAAAAAA9ps/lcxe0fwGL44dlAVMvxjhz2ajlnfni2XzACLcBGAs/s1600/07.27.17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1431" height="315" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YKAP8F-Jiyo/Wa9cmC2ahFI/AAAAAAAA9ps/lcxe0fwGL44dlAVMvxjhz2ajlnfni2XzACLcBGAs/s400/07.27.17a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I started the day taking Trees and the City with <a href="https://shariblaukopf.com/">Shari Blaukopf</a>. I was excited about it because Shari is a master at watercolors.<br />
<br />
But we started with some ink sketches. At the first workshop of the first day of the Symposium, I always feel like I've forgotten how to sketch, so these trees are a bit more tentative than my usual sketches.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VP4JyRvdRgU/Wa9cmVV-10I/AAAAAAAA9p4/39g6vQ_XMeUyJJCIwKBE1kfYjrnJUIomwCLcBGAs/s1600/07.27.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1207" data-original-width="1600" height="301" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VP4JyRvdRgU/Wa9cmVV-10I/AAAAAAAA9p4/39g6vQ_XMeUyJJCIwKBE1kfYjrnJUIomwCLcBGAs/s400/07.27.17b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Winsor and Newton donated watercolors for the workshop, so we each got a palette and tubes of a couple of blues, yellow, red, and burnt sienna. Notice I didn't say green! We worked on mixing greens, and mixing colors on the paper.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pEbxOWgWFYM/Wa9cmYDOWOI/AAAAAAAA9pw/tVFNY7MrKdAkpR68Uh6YVGzvfxCUSRICgCLcBGAs/s1600/07.27.17c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pEbxOWgWFYM/Wa9cmYDOWOI/AAAAAAAA9pw/tVFNY7MrKdAkpR68Uh6YVGzvfxCUSRICgCLcBGAs/s400/07.27.17c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I've been sketching with watercolor kits for so long that I can't remember when I last painted with watercolors straight from the tube. It was fun! Such a different experience moving that juicy paint around.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_rFbdOBeYXw/Wa9cnBhZDkI/AAAAAAAA9p8/ZesCoy2Izrc4w7DmWAVAx6QQWs9O5vNJgCLcBGAs/s1600/07.27.17e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1149" data-original-width="1600" height="286" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_rFbdOBeYXw/Wa9cnBhZDkI/AAAAAAAA9p8/ZesCoy2Izrc4w7DmWAVAx6QQWs9O5vNJgCLcBGAs/s400/07.27.17e.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Which is also why my final sketch ended up looking a bit like an acrylic painting. But I like it! It was fun.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gTlSZ3adPh0/Wa9crCKnumI/AAAAAAAA9qg/CZu6k-gqN6g7SqSIp-xD46wQvnQWFfsEgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170727_130845.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gTlSZ3adPh0/Wa9crCKnumI/AAAAAAAA9qg/CZu6k-gqN6g7SqSIp-xD46wQvnQWFfsEgCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170727_130845.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here are our final sketches. I'm surprised we got that much done with all of the chatting we were doing.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SdQFohwh1Dk/Wa9cmS4rNdI/AAAAAAAA9p0/F-5kDMaoTpAIiLgchQCzPd7dJeaM_TvDACLcBGAs/s1600/07.27.17d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1431" height="315" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SdQFohwh1Dk/Wa9cmS4rNdI/AAAAAAAA9p0/F-5kDMaoTpAIiLgchQCzPd7dJeaM_TvDACLcBGAs/s400/07.27.17d.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
After lunch and a long walk I took a demo with Peggy Wong who taught us all about making our own sketchbooks!<br />

Once again I had a whole morning with no one to look after but myself. For days I had been looking at other sketchers' posts of their sketches of "the Bean," aka Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor*. And though it looked intimidating, I decided to give it a try on my free morning. It was a lot less difficult than I thought it would be, and I ended up pretty pleased with my sketch.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KQfZBa0g2m0/WaRT8wp8RyI/AAAAAAAA9gM/CHZhfxzK0XACLQD5K5H49TfpBfxnXD4vwCLcBGAs/s1600/07.26.17c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1128" data-original-width="1453" height="310" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KQfZBa0g2m0/WaRT8wp8RyI/AAAAAAAA9gM/CHZhfxzK0XACLQD5K5H49TfpBfxnXD4vwCLcBGAs/s400/07.26.17c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I headed over to the Symposium meeting spot to check in. Since I didn't have to spend all morning registering people, I spent all morning talking to people and visiting with old friends. I even went to the sketch crawl very late because I was so busy visiting. This small mash-up of buildings and people, and the Chicago-style hot dog are my only sketches from the afternoon.<br />
<br />

The second sketch on this page is from Gabi Campanario's keynote speech. Gabi founded Urban Sketchers ten years ago, and he told us how it came about and took off.<br />

After the opening speech we headed over to the Exchequer bar for the drink and draw. Looks like there was more drinking than drawing!<br />

Hello from Chicago!<br />
<br />
<br />
* Cloud Gate is by Anish Kapoor and the nearby Crown Fountain is by Jaume Plensa. I told someone at the Symposium they are both by Plensa, and then later realized my mistake :)Memphis Urban Sketchershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03488630942281192986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6270013366297734525.post-48074863036875461312017-08-25T11:30:00.000-05:002017-08-25T11:30:12.643-05:00Symposium Day 2 - Sketching the Robie House<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here are about 30 sketchers on our way to Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0JsqZqAVVQE/WZ-e9L8z8kI/AAAAAAAA9ZU/qWPtmS1c-h8uuOAvPc1G8YiKjHCfmaNwwCLcBGAs/s1600/07.25.17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1133" data-original-width="1435" height="315" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0JsqZqAVVQE/WZ-e9L8z8kI/AAAAAAAA9ZU/qWPtmS1c-h8uuOAvPc1G8YiKjHCfmaNwwCLcBGAs/s400/07.25.17a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Not working on the Symposium meant I could do whatever! Luckily I was invited to sketch at the Robie house with a group of instructors and symposium staff, because I might not have known what I wanted to do otherwise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v3kGbKzANG8/WZ-e-HBXrcI/AAAAAAAA9Zw/8dgv4otmOfQ_p3o5IoR0T294NyPBZX_ngCLcBGAs/s1600/07.25.17b2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v3kGbKzANG8/WZ-e-HBXrcI/AAAAAAAA9Zw/8dgv4otmOfQ_p3o5IoR0T294NyPBZX_ngCLcBGAs/s400/07.25.17b2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
All of those instructors were there - talk about intimidating! So I found a far spot and used the "painterly sketching" idea I taught at a Flicker Street Studio workshop in June - I put down a light wash of color first to establish the shapes, then I put ink and more color on top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xFt7JqJwHi0/WZ-e9YOF0xI/AAAAAAAA9ZY/yLoC5jV3r6Y4B8nmOZtiB6ebfx9dffZlQCLcBGAs/s1600/07.25.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1369" data-original-width="1600" height="341" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xFt7JqJwHi0/WZ-e9YOF0xI/AAAAAAAA9ZY/yLoC5jV3r6Y4B8nmOZtiB6ebfx9dffZlQCLcBGAs/s400/07.25.17b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

After all of that sketching a few of us went on the river walk and saw more of the city. Back at the hotel I ran into a group going to get a drink so I went along and ended up at a rooftop bar.<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tbBecYvk1vY/WZ-bGo5Y_pI/AAAAAAAA9Y4/LLtH-f9g72kgLBOP-g7fYYrLjjPbSlrwACLcBGAs/s1600/1map.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1119" data-original-width="1419" height="315" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tbBecYvk1vY/WZ-bGo5Y_pI/AAAAAAAA9Y4/LLtH-f9g72kgLBOP-g7fYYrLjjPbSlrwACLcBGAs/s400/1map.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Since the second Symposium I attended, in Santo Domingo in 2012, I've been sketching maps of places I visit to give me a sense of where things are before I go. As a map it's pretty useless though :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6xKedMBA3K4/WZ-bGqVWdjI/AAAAAAAA9Y8/gxZTlJdojywDG-H_FdbVrTeji7Av8_GfQCLcBGAs/s1600/07.24.17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1133" data-original-width="1435" height="315" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6xKedMBA3K4/WZ-bGqVWdjI/AAAAAAAA9Y8/gxZTlJdojywDG-H_FdbVrTeji7Av8_GfQCLcBGAs/s400/07.24.17a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This was the easiest traveling I've ever done for a Symposium. A one and a half hour flight in the time zone seemed like cheating.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XaJ3NHpyXbI/WZ-bGtKHa4I/AAAAAAAA9ZA/1UMvngpYeRgkg9mju8IgPDgcANqnbPDXACLcBGAs/s1600/07.24.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1133" data-original-width="1435" height="315" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XaJ3NHpyXbI/WZ-bGtKHa4I/AAAAAAAA9ZA/1UMvngpYeRgkg9mju8IgPDgcANqnbPDXACLcBGAs/s400/07.24.17b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I took the train from the airport to my hotel. Easy peasy. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZAB8WTor48g/WZ-bHrVFFFI/AAAAAAAA9ZE/Y5A83wtnP-k7LHk5U5U-wDJJf3BAlHN8gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170724_215554.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZAB8WTor48g/WZ-bHrVFFFI/AAAAAAAA9ZE/Y5A83wtnP-k7LHk5U5U-wDJJf3BAlHN8gCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170724_215554.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
This was my first site after getting off of the train, as if the city was greeting me.<br />

I did this sketch in Mike Daikubara's workshop Sketch Now, Think Later. Mike's take on sketching is to make the most of your sketching time, which includes not mixing watercolors! I am also interested in doing whatever I can to get myself to put pen or paint to paper. So Big Post-Symposium Change #1 is reworking my watercolor palette (again) to eliminate or at least limit color mixing.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ci5l-A2murY/WYUf0jWgbXI/AAAAAAAA8_c/9jy_dC_GTu4fxBYFxFiILS12pJeZgcaxgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170803_212003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ci5l-A2murY/WYUf0jWgbXI/AAAAAAAA8_c/9jy_dC_GTu4fxBYFxFiILS12pJeZgcaxgCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170803_212003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
More on the Symposium as soon as I can get two sketchbooks-worth of sketches scanned, as well as more information about (probably) Big Post-Symposium Change #2 and (possibly) Big Post-Symposium Change #3.<br />

Well that sure was fun! I sketched 86 people, so I didn't make it to 100, but that is 26 more than I did during the last challenge in March!<br />
<br />
(click images to see more detail)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AuBPzV82sAI/WXNylWQoOfI/AAAAAAAA8Z8/48XJlJ__MrsurFd0pH20LnqXk5YoCmFgACLcBGAs/s1600/07.18.17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1148" data-original-width="1600" height="286" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AuBPzV82sAI/WXNylWQoOfI/AAAAAAAA8Z8/48XJlJ__MrsurFd0pH20LnqXk5YoCmFgACLcBGAs/s400/07.18.17a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
During this challenge I was reminded how important it is for me to make time to sketch, instead of waiting for when I have time. This sketch was done one morning before work. I parked and looked up and there were all these people walking into work. So I sketched them!<br />
<br />
And that's something that is so great about sketching - when you are in it, you pay more attention to the world around you than you would otherwise.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x-i-8rx3tB8/WXNylcXMVYI/AAAAAAAA8Z0/RAbC1UUp9cYHXR5RrEV-pdFn_vs9mXKZgCLcBGAs/s1600/07.18.17b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1124" data-original-width="1600" height="280" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x-i-8rx3tB8/WXNylcXMVYI/AAAAAAAA8Z0/RAbC1UUp9cYHXR5RrEV-pdFn_vs9mXKZgCLcBGAs/s400/07.18.17b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This was a good way to prepare for the Symposium, too. I get out of the habit of sketching every day, so this helped me to get back into it.<br />
<br />
I get out of that habit because I would just be sketching every day things. But this exercise helped me to see/remember that the everyday stuff is worth paying attention to and remembering.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lW5Cm4TbKH8/WXNymOPTZPI/AAAAAAAA8aA/F6BNw6-19hEnGUR33mwBP8Ry547xi4tagCLcBGAs/s1600/07.19.17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1124" data-original-width="1600" height="280" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lW5Cm4TbKH8/WXNymOPTZPI/AAAAAAAA8aA/F6BNw6-19hEnGUR33mwBP8Ry547xi4tagCLcBGAs/s400/07.19.17a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
One Week 100 Cars would be a very easy challenge for me.<br />
<br />

In the end this reminded me how much I enjoy sketching people, especially with my fat pen.<br />
<br />
Now I'm all ready for the Symposium next week!<br />

I am so excited about attending the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago as a participant! For the last several years I've helped organize the Symposium so, while they were all great, there was a lot more responsibility than sketching.<br />
<br />
Here are the sketching supplies I'll have with me next week in Chicago...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0hZRojjnAZI/WW66TY7iOKI/AAAAAAAA8U8/3d5rLrgxFbMMkFGwJse2CgxPxISeybqBwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170718_202708.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0hZRojjnAZI/WW66TY7iOKI/AAAAAAAA8U8/3d5rLrgxFbMMkFGwJse2CgxPxISeybqBwCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170718_202708.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
This is a new bag I just put together of all of the things I like to be able to grab in a hurry.<br />
(left to right)<br />
• watercolor kit made by Peggy Wong and filled with my current favorite assortment of pigments<br />
• Palomino Blackwing pencil<br />
• red/blue Mitsubishi pencil<br />
• Sakura Pigma Sensei C10 chisel pen<br />
• Kuretake waterbrush pen<br />
• Sailor Fude DE Mannen Brush Style Fountain Pen (This is new to me. I bought it for one of the workshops I'm taking.)<br />
• My favorite! Sakura Pigma Graphic 1 (aka my fat pen)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gBykHXfsX1M/WW66Uww7yFI/AAAAAAAA8VA/ehslSte0H1kJ841kJSeOAXPzO5JS7Zy_ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170718_202700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gBykHXfsX1M/WW66Uww7yFI/AAAAAAAA8VA/ehslSte0H1kJ841kJSeOAXPzO5JS7Zy_ACLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170718_202700.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
This is my regular purse bag that keeps finding more things in it.<br />
(left to right)<br />
• two travel brushes (The bigger one is new to me. I bought it for one of the workshops I'm taking.)<br />
• another fat pen<br />
• Pentel brush pen (black, and like a fountain pen with a cartridge)<br />
• brush pen filled with diluted sumi ink<br />
• Pentel ink brush pen (gray, and it comes in the brush pen)<br />
• white Uni-ball Signo pen<br />
• <a href="http://sketchwork.blogspot.com/2013/05/supply-sunday-dr-ph-martins-hydrus-fine.html">Pentel Aquash waterbrush pen filled with Dr. PH Marten's watercolor</a><br />
• variety of colored pencils, some watercolor, some not<br />
• Palomino Blackwing pencil<br />
<div>
• Kuretake waterbrush pen<br />
Also along the top - a water cup, clips, and double-sided tape.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll also have a few extra things requested by instructors, like fine-tip pens, 6B pencils, and an eraser.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Fgjdwy5QQXI/WW6_-Q02pII/AAAAAAAA8VM/SQAJgGcKYykiCxVLwI7L1Ir1bKvBHSjKACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20170718_204006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Fgjdwy5QQXI/WW6_-Q02pII/AAAAAAAA8VM/SQAJgGcKYykiCxVLwI7L1Ir1bKvBHSjKACLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20170718_204006.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Sketchbooks... I prefer carrying one small sketchbook at all times, but I know I'll need to make larger sketches and some of the instructors specified watercolor paper, and some specified cheap paper for thumbnails. So I know I'll use the small Stillman & Birn Alpha (top left) for all-day everyday, and probably the Barcelona souvenir Moleskine watercolor paper accordion sketchbook. But, I love the Stillman & Birn Zeta (bottom left) - nice thick smooth white paper. Yum! Definitely the Moleskine Cahier journal that's under the Barcelona sketchbook, for thumbnails and such.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Stillman & Birn and Moleskine are two for my favorite sketchbooks. Stillman & Birn sent me some of the new softcover books to test out. It took me a minute to get used to the different format, but I love that they are lighter than the hardcover, and the paper is as good as ever. The way they open can be a little clumsy - they don't always want to crease in the right place - but that is not important to me. I like my sketchbooks messy as they are part of my everyday life and therefore not precious. The soft cover makes it easier for them to be everyday sketchbooks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Moleskines are just good all the way around. I use a cahier journal every day - several actually, for different projects. For years Moleskine was my go-to sketchbook, but these days I prefer bright white paper.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My other favorite sketchbook, not pictured here, is Laloran. They are handmade in Portugal with high-quality paper, and are beautifully bound. I buy a few every year and pick them up at the Symposium, so I will have more soon!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well this post turned into a sketchbook review, but what can I say - I do like to talk about sketching materials! Another reason I'm excited about the Symposium next week - it will give me a chance to share sketching tips and supply recommendations and to learn from all of the amazing sketchers from around the world!</div>
