Supply Sunday: The Art of Urban Sketching

This isn't technically a "supply" but if you are interested in urban sketching, you should have this book. It's by Gabi Campanario, the founder of Urban Sketchers, and features a lot of the urban sketching correspondents.

It is a great book, full of a diversity of sketchers and styles of sketching.

My Lunch Spot

Testing out my Derwent Inktense pencils at my lunch spot. This was a couple of weeks ago when it was finally sunny and warm after what felt like years of grey skies and rain. Perfect day for sketching.

Follow Friday: Carl Moore

Carl Moore is one of my favorite Memphis artists. One of my favorite artists, really. He uses paint very succinctly to say a lot about the human condition.

Check out his blog here.

Here's my favorite painting by Carl, and here he is next to a sketch portrait I made of him (click images for more detail).

I'm making the tiniest of paintings of my recent trip to London. Last night during Studio Night I finished the one on the far left.

Memphis Monday: India Palace

I love to go to India Palace to order take out, because they make me sit down and they bring me free hot tea. It's a lovely few minutes, followed by delicious food at home.

Supply Sunday: Derwent Inktense Pencils

Urban Sketcher Lynne Chapman uses Derwent Inktense pencils with such amazing results I just had to get some for myself.

Right after I got them I tested them out at my desk, and compared them to watercolor pencils. They are more vibrant than regular watercolor pencils!

Follow Friday: Martha Kelly

My friend Martha Kelly is in Paris right this very minute making sketches! Really I don't know what she's doing right this very minute, but knowing her it's either sketching, walking or playing the banjo. She's posting some great sketches already - take a look here!

Urban Sketching in Memphis

Gabi Campanario, founder of Urban Sketchers and author of the Art of Urban Sketching, said some great things about urban sketching on facebook recently, which I wanted to share here. He said... "Urban sketching is about drawing places that can be put on a map, and everything that happens in those places."

My place is usually Memphis, but sometimes it's London or New York or Greensboro, GA. For a week this summer it will be Barcelona for the Urban Sketching Symposium!

But mostly it's Memphis.

Evergreens

This is from the end of February, so it was still winter, but I used a green pen so it looks like spring! Right now everything in Memphis looks like this.

Winter Trees and My Ideal Bookshelf

This was from February when it was still winter.

I had started a list of books to share on My Ideal Bookshelf: Memphis Edition. But I had trouble narrowing it down to ten and then I ran out of time because I went out of town. So here's a list of books that I really liked and/or had a big impact on me.

Family Time

I wanted to do a sketch portrait of my niece Genevieve, but she is not capable of being still. I think that is an epidemic among 6-year-olds.
